All Hints & Tips

Have you ever had to remember which colors you used for a particular design?  Keep a notebook and pen/pencil near your embroidery machine.  When you start a design, record the design name and where you found it, if known.  Jot down the thread color names or numbers as you change them and finally list the stabilizer and fabric type.  It only takes a few seconds but will really help when you want to duplicate a design sometime in the future.  You could even staple a scanned image of the finished item to the notebook page to help you find the information more easily.

If you're getting thread nests or breakage, double check to be sure the needle is not in backwards (yes they do have a front and a back!) and that the bobbin is not in upside down. Sometimes it is the simple things that cause the most frustration.

Next time you are in a dept store, search out a few embroidered items and really look at them.  Look at the front and the back, the material that is used, and if there are any remnants of stabilizer.  Compare two of the same designs on different items and notice if there are any differences.  Really looking at "professional" designs may help set more realistic expectations for your own stitch outs.

Not all designs and fabrics are suitable together.  Make sure the design you choose is not too dense for the fabric you choose and that the fabric is suitable for the project.  If you aren't sure ask online or at your local sewing shop.

When we try to do things in a hurry it usually ends up taking twice as much time to complete the task and in embroidery it can also mean ruined projects.  If you don't have time to do it right, where will you find the time to do it over?

Even if you're sure you know how to do a particular project, it is always a good idea to at least skim over the instructions to make sure there isn't something added or a step we may have forgotten about.

Keep your scissors near your sewing area.  Tie some ribbon through one of the handles and hang them from a picture hook or suction cup hook attached to a window.  It keeps them close but out of the way.
